The Ministry of Health (MOH) has ordered the recall of the TL Tan Lung and TLC canned sardines after dead worms were found in them.
Health director-general, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the enforcement action was taken against importers Fujian Yongfa Co. Ltd and DongshanDongyi Foods Co. Ltd to recall the products after tests revealed they were tainted with the Genus Anisakisspp, a kind of parasitic worm, thus violating the Food Act 1983.
"MOH, through its Food Safety and Quality Division is always monitoring imported food products, including canned sardines and mackerels.
"If they are found to be non-compliant with the Food Act 1983, action will be taken," he said in a statement, here, today.
Dr Noor Hisham said the action was taken following a report which had gone viral on social media that the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency had instructed three importers to recall the canned sardines from China found to contain dead worms.
