Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently announced that the Women and Children's Complex, which is part of the component in the upgrading of Kajang Hospital, is expected to be ready in 2021.

The complex costsRM304.5 million.

Najib expressed hope that construction would ease congestion at the 129-year-old hospital.

Najib, who made a surprise visit to the hospital in 2015 without the knowledge of Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, said he was able to see then the real condition of the hospital.

"I was able to see the real condition of the hospital, not like during the prime minister's visit when everything was in order.

"The condition of the building was bad, meaning it has to be renovated. I hope, if it (work) can be expedited, the better," he said when opening the ground breaking ceremony for Upgrading of Kajang Hospital project (Women and Children's Complex) here recently.

The Women and Children's Complex, to be built about 800 metres away from the site of the existing hospital, will have 272 beds, 14 labour rooms and six surgery rooms, as well as has specialist clinics and a daily care centre.

Najib said approval for upgrading of Kajang Hospital was announced in the 2016 Budget and the project would benefit almost 1.2 million residents in Kajang and Hulu Langat.

"This is the Kajang Barisan Nasional Move that can benefit the people, not only hospital, but also MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) from Sungai Buloh to Kajang stretching 51 km," he said.

Meanwhile, the prime minister said the health service provided in the country was among the best, compared in other countries.

In fact, he said, the health service at government hospitals and clinics also only imposed minimum payment, an estimated RM50 for maternity cost and RM1 for out-patient treatment.

"Apart from that, the ratio of one doctor for 400 patients is also expected to be achieved by 2020 as part of the effort to improve our service, he added.

Also present at the ceremony were Dr Subramaniam and Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
