COVID-19: New record of 21,668 cases, 318 new deaths

The health ministry has reported a record 21,668 Covid-19 cases and 318 deaths in the past 24 hours.

In a Twitter post, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the total number of infections now stands at 1,342,215.

He said there were 17,687 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 1,093,503.

There are now 237,021 active cases with 1,059 patients being treated in intensive care and 543 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 318 deaths take the number of fatalities to 11,691.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 6,278.

This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,436), Kedah (2,143), Sabah (2,052), Johor (1,706), Penang (1,229), Sarawak (1,216), Kelantan (972), Perak (930), Negeri Sembilan (899), Pahang (629), Terengganu (594), Melaka (494), Putrajaya (56), Perlis (23) and Labuan (11).

There were 21,610 local infections today, comprising 18,332 Malaysians and 3,278 foreigners, as well as 58 imported cases.

The 318 who died comprised 256 Malaysians and 62 foreigners. All but 79 had existing medical conditions while a total of 93 were brought in dead.

Selangor also reported the highest number of fatalities with 118, followed by Johor (52), Kuala Lumpur (45), Sabah (28), Kedah (19), Penang (10), Melaka (10), Perak (9), Pahang (8), Negeri Sembilan (7), Terengganu (4), Kelantan (4) and Sarawak (4).

According to Noor Hisham, as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate (R0, or R-nought) was 1.06.

Perlis recorded the highest R-nought level with 1.40, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan with 1.23, and Sabah and Penang with 1.16. Perak recorded an R-nought level of 1.15, Johor (1.13), Sarawak, Terengganu and Kedah (1.12), Pahang (1.09), Negeri Sembilan (1.05), Melaka (1.03), Selangor (1.01), Putrajaya (0.97) and Labuan (0).

About 98% or 21,228 cases were Category 1 and 2, while 2,720 new cases, or 12.6%, involved individuals who were fully vaccinated. - FMT
