Record 19,819 Covid-19 cases, 257 deaths

The health ministry has reported a record 19,819 Covid-19 cases, just 181 short of breaching the 20,000 mark, and 257 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The previous records were 17,786 cases on July 31 and 219 deaths on Aug 2.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 12,704 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 962,733.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 1,183,110.

There are now 210,522 active cases, with 1,069 patients being treated in intensive care and 553 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 257 deaths take the number of fatalities to 9,855.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 8,377.

This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,467), Kedah (1,371), Johor (1,162), Kelantan (1,003), Sabah (949), Penang (867), Negeri Sembilan (800), Perak (662), Pahang (558), Sarawak (552), Melaka (508), Terengganu (481), Putrajaya (46), Perlis (11) and Labuan (5).

Both Kelantan and Penang registered a record high number of cases.

There were 19,796 local infections today, involving 16,770 Malaysians and 3,026 foreigners, as well as 23 imported cases.

The 257 deceased comprised 226 Malaysians and 31 foreigners. All but 51 had existing medical conditions while 21 were brought in dead.

Selangor reported the highest number of deaths with 91, followed by Kuala Lumpur (74), Johor (25), Melaka (24), Perak (9), Negeri Sembilan (9), Kedah (8), Sabah (6), Terengganu (4), Penang (3), Kelantan (3) and Pahang (1).

Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate (R0 or R-nought) remained at 1.07.

Kelantan recorded the highest R-nought level again with 1.31. Other states and federal territories that recorded R0 levels above 1 were Terengganu (1.27), Perak (1.24), Sabah (1.17), Penang (1.17), Kedah (1.16), Johor (1.14), Pahang (1.14), Kuala Lumpur (1.12), Putrajaya (1.11), Melaka (1.08), Sarawak (1.08) and Selangor (1.06). - FMT
