Delayed Petra Jaya hospital to be completed by year end – Health Minister

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the delayed RM500 million Petra Jaya Hospital construction project will be completed by the end of this year.

He said the contractors were appointed with the understanding that they could competently complete the project within schedule, but the construction was disrupted due to unavoidable circumstances.

"I hope with the new schedule for completion of the hospital with 300 beds, the contractors will be more responsible; because of the delay, the Sarawak General Hospital (HUS) and the people around here are victims."

"If completed by the end of this year, it means the project has been delayed for one and a half years, because originally it was supposed to be completed in June last year," he told a press conference at HUS here this evening.

Last October, Works Minister Datuk Seri FadillahYusof said the Public Works Department had issued a 'Notice Of Termination' to the contractors due to failure in completing the project on schedule and charged Liquidated and Ascertained Damages (LAD) of RM9.219 million against them, and set June this year as the new date of completion.

Dr Subramaniam said a development project was underway in HUS involving the construction of a complex that would house a daycare centre, operation theatre and pathology laboratory, with 1,800 parking spaces, costing around RM350 million.
