The senior citizen population in Malaysia is expected to reach 5.6 million by year 2030.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya attributed the ageing population's higher life expectancy to advancement in healthcare in comparison with facilities that were available 50 years ago.

"Malaysians are living longer. So it won't be surprising if the demand for nursing homes increases," he told a special press conference here after visiting the 'Eden On The Park Nursing Care Residence'.

To this end, he said the government must be prepared to build more of such residences.

"The concept introduced at the Eden On The Park residence is a good example of an inclusive healthcare residence which offers comprehensive medical and daily care.
