Beauty products to be banned

KUALA LUMPUR - Three cosmetic products found to contain poisonous chemicals -- tretinoin and mercury -- are to be removed from the shelves.

The products are the Multi Cream manufactured by Cylin Cosmetic Sdn Bhd, and Dqistee Night Cream and Dqistee Beauty Day Cream by Ami Cosmetic, Indonesia.

In a recent statement , the Health Ministry's pharmaceutical services senior director Datuk Eisah A. Rahman said the two elements were prohibited in cosmetic products due to its detrimental side-effects.

"Cosmetic preparations containing tretinoin should only be used under supervision of healthcare professionals.

"Tretinoin can cause skin discomfort, redness, stinging, peeling and the skin can become sensitive to sunlight," she said.

She added that cosmetic products by Ami Cosmetic contained mercury which are usually found in products marketed for skin lightening and anti-ageing treatment (freckles, blemishes and wrinkles).

"Exposure to mercury can cause damage to the kidneys and the nervous system, as well as skin rashes and irritations," she said, adding that it could also affect brain development of infants and children.

Eisha advised consumers to contact the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau at 03-7883 5532/5534 if they experienced any allergic reactions from the use of the cosmetic products.

The Health Ministry has instructed companies responsible for its distribution to immediately halt the products' sale and supply and to remove the stocks within 72 hours.

"Possession of this product is an offence under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984 which provides for a fine of RM25,000 or jail term of up to three years' or both for the first offence.

"Repeat offenders can be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed less than five years' or both."

Companies that committed the offence for the first time risk being fined up to RM50,000, whereas for subsequent offences they would be fined up to RM100,000.
