The number of specialist doctors currently serving with the Health Ministry has increased by 43.38 % to 4,843, as of January this year, from 3,380 in 2012.
Health Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the number of specialist doctors registered with the National Specialist Register stood at 9,632, as of December last year.
He said the placement of specialist doctors at hospitals in Sarawak had also increased by 43.57 % or 346 people as at Jan 31 this year, compared to 241 in 2014.
"Currently, the neurosurgery services are only available at the Sarawak General Hospital and the Sibu Hospital involving eight specialist doctors," he said.
Dr Hilmi said in a bid to raise the number of specialist doctors at government hospitals, the ministry had been implementing various initiatives, including by increasing the intake of medical officers for the 'SarjanaKepakaran' and 'HadiahLatihan Persekutuan' programmes.
