A 26-year-old man from Batu Kawa who was rabies encephalitis positive has died at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here, according to local newspaper reports today.
The reports said the victim, identified as Jackson Yap Foh Fong, died at about 10 am today while receiving treatment at the hospital.
His body has been sent to the hospital’s Forensic Medical Department.
With this case, the rabies death toll now stands at 17 out of 18 infections reported since the outbreak of the disease was declared in Sarawak in June 2017.
However, there has been no official statement from the Health Ministry on the latest death.
Yesterday, Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement that the victim was admitted to SGH for further treatment on Saturday when he became weak and experienced breathing difficulty.
“Further checks showed that the victim was experiencing confusion and hydrophobia, had difficulty swallowing and his body muscles were weak,” he said.
