More paediatricians need to be trained in neonatal care – Health Minister

There is a need to train more paediatricians in neonatal theology as the government focuses on increasing maternal and child hospitals nationwide, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said nearly 30,000 babies were born premature every year, and hence more neonatal theologists are needed to deal with premature babies.

"We have 36 neonatal theologists nationwide, thus paediatricians should be trained in the area of neonatal to attend to premature babies," he said after officiating the Kuala Lumpur International Neonatology Conference.

Earlier, Dr Subramaniam in his keynote address said the ministry hoped to assign one nurse to one premature baby to reduce the possibility of infections being spread among babies.

"When one nurse handles too many babies, infections can be easily spread, so to reduce infections, more nurses are required, thus training these nurses in this area is essential," he said.
